Aktive investeringer
Når man taler om aktive investeringer, taler man om, at investorer konstant er på jagt efter et merafkast på deres nyeste investering. For at være i stand til at opnå dette merafkast igen og igen, skal investoren (eller investorforeningen) bruge meget tid på at analysere virksomhederne og omverdensforholdene.
For eksempel skal investoren overveje, hvordan virksomhedens tilstand er og hvordan virksomheden kan stå imod eksterne parametre, som har kan have eventuel indflydelse på virksomheden. Yderligere skal investoren vurdere, hvordan virksomheden kan klare sig i fremtiden og om der er vækst i vente.

Passive investeringer
Ved passive investeringer jagter investoren ikke et konstant merafkast på investeringerne. I stedet har investoren valgt at investere i virksomheder, hvor vedkommende har tiltro til, at de kan stige i værdi i løbet af mange år. Når man taler om passive investeringer, bliver der ikke lavet hurtige salg eller hurtige køb på samme måde, som ved aktive investeringer.
Ved passive investeringer accepterer investoren det gennemsnitlige afkast og den udvikling, som foregår på pågældende marked.
